Handy Signs is an innovative start-up that uses AI to break down communication barriers between Deaf and hearing people, promoting genuine social inclusion. We have created Andy, a highly expressive, photorealistic 3D Avatar with extremely fluid signing, capable of translating text and audio tracks into Italian Sign Language (LIS), delivering universal, seamless accessibility. We primarily address museums, cultural institutions, historic villages and cities of art, and organisations in the tourism sector that wish to make their services accessible to everyone, without compromise. What makes Handy Signs unique is the integration of advanced language models and proprietary computer vision technologies, which allow our avatars to reproduce not only the signs but also the non-manual components of LIS – facial expressions and mouth movements – essential for correctly conveying meaning and emotion. Two strategic areas: 1. Museums and Cultural Venues: we transform the visitor experience into a fully accessible journey. Thanks to Andy, the museum's works and stories come to life, offering detailed explanations in LIS that accompany Deaf visitors through every room, overcoming linguistic and cognitive barriers. 2. Inclusive Tourism in Historic Villages and Cities of Art: we want the beauty of Italy to be a heritage for all. Our solution enables municipalities and tour operators to equip historic villages and cities of art with accessible virtual video guides that present the local area and its traditions in LIS. This not only gives Deaf tourists independence but also enhances the entire cultural heritage through a 360-degree approach to accessibility and hospitality.
